In Flanders Fields

Remember the fallen who so bravely gave their life so that we can live in peace. In all wars that have ever happened and in the wars that are happening now.

Remember the fallen of recent battles and wars- in Afghanistan and Iraq and many other places. It is disgusting that there is still wars. Awful wars that kill so many people. We hardly hear anything about these wars and these battles- all of these men and women who have lost their lives. So many have families, wives, husbands and children. These are left behind all because their spouse or mother or father is trying to save the lives of so many people.

Remember the conditions that wars were fought in and are still fought in. The battle of Rorke's Drift was fought in Africa against Zulus. The British were severly low on numbers due to Rorke's Drift only being a mission station. Not much is said about this war but the film- Zulu- shows it all. How awful the conditions were- baking sun and the soldiers were injured but still fought. WW1, fought in muddy, wet, rat and flea-ridden trenches. In the worst battle, the Battle of the Somme, more than 300,000 people died. My great-grandfather fought there in 1917. He was injured so he managed to survive. Which is lucky because if he died, my grandma wouldn't have been born, my dad wouldn't and my sister and I wouldn't.

WW2 was disgusting- terrible conditions in the trenches again, fighting in the jungles with the Japanese. Being put into prisoner of war camps. Japanese prisoner of war camps were evil. One of the tortures was to put bamboo down the prisoners nails so that it would grow and then make the nail fall off. It is disgusting. Many people came home like a shell. The shell of a person they once were. How Jews and the many different groups were forced into concentration camps. How many of those died? 6 million. It's disgusting. The Korean War was fought in the jungle. Under horrible conditions.

And how our army are fighting alongside the American army to bring peace to places such as Afghanistan. So many people have died in the last 20 years. No-one should have to do this. So many people get forgotten and this should not be the case. Everyone should honour the dead.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

        In Flanders fields.
