Q&A part 1

I asked my friend (hi Liv!) to ask me some questions about Tourettes so I could put them into this blog.

1) Do tics hurt?

Yes, sometimes. Especially ones when I accidentally hit myself or when I cough violently, srunch my face up too hard or make a weird kind of animal noise too hard which makes my throat hurt.

2) How is Tourettes diagnosed?

To be diagnosed with Tourettes someone must:

  • Have two or more motor tics and at least one vocal tic although these may not happen at the same time.
  • Have had tics for at least a year. Tics can occur many times a day, nearly every day or on and off.
  • Have tics start before 18 years old.
  • Have symptoms that are not due to taking medicine or due to any other medical condition.
3) What could people do to become more educated about it?

People could look beyond the stereotypical tics (swearing) which would then help a lot more. People could also search how to help someone with tics and to not think that people with Tourettes can control what they do or say. They can also try to identify when there is someone with Tourettes who may be suppressing their tics. This will then make them feel more safe.

4) How can friends and family show support?

All they really need to do is just let the person with Tourettes know that they are welcome to do their tics and that they don't have to suppress them. You could also help in public if someone says something to the Tourettes sufferer.

5) Do you feel that it helps to talk about Tourettes?

Yes I do because I want people to realise that Tourettes isn't a nice thing to have and that it isn't nice to joke around saying that you have it when you don't. It also helps me to feel better about my Tourettes.
